The first issue features full colour articles on potentially-habitable planets for Humans, Germany’s planned invasion of Great Britain during the Second World War, and a fold-out guide to the opening two-part miniseries of Battlestar Galactica.

I love Japanese fashion magazine Zipper, which I first picked up on my trip to Japan in 2006. It’s insanely expensive outside of Japan, so I only buy it very rarely. Luckily, there’s always so much inspiration inside it keeps me going for years. I love the crazy outfits, the awesome page design, the typography and the street snaps. I don’t like how badly it makes me want to go back to Japan.

My newest zine is up for sale - Oddments #4 is the Book Issue and has stuff on my favourite bookshops for old and independent books, some of my favourite book finds and tales from the visitor book we kept in our flat when bands used to stay over. Plus, for fun, there’s a pull out colour mini zine in the middle all about my Day in the Life which includes outfit drawings, doodles of everything I ate and my word of the day! I hope you like it.

You can also buy a copy in person at the Glasgow International Artists Bookfair at the Royal Concert Hall this weekend. Look out for Pushpin Zines at table 15 near the Buchanan Street entrance. I’ll have some special offers and a box full of bargain secondhand zines!

dotdotdash are looking for submissions for a zine collaboration project called Fingerprint.

What is Fingerprint?
Fingerprint will take the place of our usual submissions process. Rather than submitting creative writing or art to the magazine, you are invited to submit a zine of your own making. Each copy of Fingerprint, instead of a magazine, will be a package filled with a unique combination of zines.

USURP Zine fair Saturday 28th April 2012.

- We are currently putting together details of how many tables will be available on the day and will keep you updated.

- Tables are free (but limited) and we are looking for applicants to take up these seats! To apply, please be in touch with your details and web link so we can allocate tables.

- We also have a number of slots for workshop demos. We are particularly interested in talks on- tips for self publishing and working with printers and screen-print demos. But if you have any ideas for workshops or talks, please be in touch with a summary.

- We currently have tables assigned to our friends Walrus Zines and Other Asias. We will be updating the list of contributors with tables over the next month before out progamme is out!

Future Tense

Subtitled ‘A comic compilation about “2012” and/or “the future,” featuring 11 different artists’, which is exactly what it is. I don’t normally buy comics because I’m more of a words person than a pictures person but I enjoyed this a lot and two of my favourites were almost text free, by Edie Fake and Caroline Paquita. There’s also a great mostly-text piece by one of my favourite zinesters Al Burian. Not everything was to my taste but that’s the risk with compilations.

My favourite thing about the zine though is how it looks - it’s printed on a risograph duplicator mostly in blue ink so there’s some lovely print effects (although I trained as a printmaker so I may be biased). The yellow pages in the middle are a nice touch too.

Well worth your money and still available from Caroline Paquita’s Etsy shop, along with an illustrated calendar.

Reading Outing #2 - Astronomy Now

This wasn’t a proper reading outing, more that I had too many errands in town and had to stop for lunch. Luckily I had the latest issue of Astronomy Now in my bag.

I’ve been a space nerd since I was very small and even though I can keep up with all the space news online it’s nice to sit down and read some proper articles. This issue had some good stuff on the Moon and nice article about indoor astronomy - I didn’t know hanging out the window with my telescope was so frowned upon! I wish the magazine was more fun but I like it more than the others I’ve read.
